Dear Nest Support Team,
I am deeply disappointed by Google’s decision to discontinue support for my Nest Learning Thermostat (1st/2nd gen). This device was marketed as a long-term smart home investment, and abruptly rendering core features obsolete-including app control and remote access-undermines trust in your products.
While I appreciate the $130 discount on the 4th-gen model, this does not fully offset the inconvenience of forced obsolescence. Many users, myself included, purchased these thermostats with the expectation of ongoing functionality. The sudden loss of smart features (despite hardware still functioning) feels like a deliberate push to monetize loyal customers.
Key concerns:
Lack of long-term support commitments at the time of purchase
No option for third-party app integration post-discontinuation
Environmental impact of discarding functional devices
I urge Google to reconsider this decision or extend the upgrade offer’s value. At minimum, provide concrete steps for users to retain basic smart functionality through alternative means. Or, Is there anything else you can offer me? Like a free upgrade and installation. It is no fault of mine that you are choosing to discontinue my service.
Sincerely,
Ruby Wilder

This behavior is outright wrong. These products were purchased in good fath that they would continue working with remote services. This was why we switched from non remote devices ro your device. This is the preverbial and premeditated bait and switch. We will be writing Congess and if this remains unresolved we will be divesting ourselves from your products and services.

I fully agree with this assessment. It’s a disgrace that Google has unilaterally forced the obsolescence of Nest thornistats well within the working lifespan of the product. In doing so I believe Google has breached trust but also misrepresented and misdescribed their products and product features for which customers should be financially compensated.

Whoever said the life of a thermostat is 5 to 7 years? I have a 30-year-old Honetwell that works just fine (albeit not wifi). I'm not only disappointed in this discontinuation decision, but why should I buy a Nest Gen 4 just to have it discontinued in 5 to 7 years? Honeywell, here I come.

Screw Google and their discount! I have two perfectly good working Nest thermostats that I will be replacing with a different brand like Ecobee or Honeywell. I hope a class action lawsuit forces Google to drop this ludicrous screwing of Nest customers before the deadline date. I will never buy any Google product ever!

I am writing to follow up on my previous message about Google’s decision to discontinue support for the Nest learning thermostat (first and 2nd). I am very upset by this decision, which made my thermostat obsolete even though they still worked perfectly.
I was so disappointed that I could not in good conscience pay Google more money to upgrade a product that should’ve continued to work. Instead, I bought five ECOBEE THERMOSTAT for my three homes and swapped them out myself. I am not very handy, but the process was easy.
I made this decision because I felt forced by Google‘s lack of long-term support and the sudden removal of features that I relied on. The $130 discount on a newer nest model did not make up for the inconvenience or loss of trust. I hope Google will reconsider how it treats loyal customers in the future.
Farewell Google.
