Nest started reading the wrong temperature.

I bought a house with a nest device 5 years ago. It never really gave us issues, but suddenly is reading an extremely wrong temperature.

If we reset it, or turn off the breaker and all power to the AC, the nest will initially read the correct temp. But after a while, it keeps climbing until it will reach something like 87 or 85 degrees, when in reality, the house is closer to 75. The AC will never stop running, and eventually the pipes will start freezing over.

Did the temp sensor just break?  I think it's a 3rd gen.

Hi @goobieboy!

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear that your Nest thermostat device is reading the wrong temperature. I appreciate your efforts in taking those steps before. I'm happy to help you!

To help me find the best solution, I'll need to ask you a few questions:

  • Just to be sure, could you check the Nest thermostat model you own? Here's an article that will help you identify it: How to tell which Nest thermostat you have.
  • Where did you install your thermostat? (In a room and on a wall or stand.)
  • Do you have other active Nest thermostats? If so, do they show the same issue?
  • What is the brand/model of the HVAC/heat pump?
  • Are there any recent changes to the HVAC system?
  • Have there been any recent power outages or power issues?

Please keep me posted. I'll be waiting for your response.

Best regards,
Geremi
