Cast screen" crashes after a few seconds on all devices and networks (but "Cast tab" works)

I’m encountering a recurring issue when using “Cast screen” via Chromecast:
The connection drops after a few seconds (approx. 3–5 seconds), consistently, across:

  • Multiple Windows laptops (Chrome and Edge)

  • Multiple Wi-Fi networks and locations

  • Multiple Chromecast devices (v3, Google TV)

Details:

  • Cast tab” works perfectly and remains stable

  • Cast screen” crashes or disconnects almost immediately

  • Behavior is identical across Chrome and Edge (latest versions)

  • Hard reset of Chromecast doesn’t help

  • I’ve tested with fresh browser installs, incognito mode, no extensions, driver updates, disabled hardware acceleration — nothing resolves it

It seems to point toward a WebRTC bug, a Chrome 125+ regression, or a firmware decoding issue on Chromecast.
Please advise or escalate to engineering if known.

We're running into the same issue, in terms of symptoms.

We've determined it to be an audio issue based on the logs we see from chrome://media-router-internals/

Mirroring will stop. MirroringService.SessionError: 8

We have found 2 work arounds

1) Disable audio on your computer, restart chrome, then start casting

2) Plug a second monitor into your computer and you will have the option to toggle audio on/off before casting.

We need a more permanent solution though...

Fyi, Google Chromecast team is aware of this screen casting from Win 10/11 issue, fix should be in the upcoming browser update (next week sometime I think)
